I've seen some posts floating around about adopt hoarders, so as someone who both sells and buys them, I'm going to give my 2 cents.

I truly get how frustrating it is to lose an auction. Especially when it's often to the same person and especially if you feel like you would've appreciated the character more. But do keep in mind some people like their adopts, without feeling the need to share art of them. Some of us use them in stories, to make it easier to picture and describe our characters, even though we might not publish our work. Some of us draw art of them we don't post, etc. And even if we don't? We bought them, so we get to decide what happens to them, in a sense, no?

Again I get the feeling, but I feel like it's more of an auction problem than a hoarder problem? It just happens that if you are someone that buys a lot, ppl are more likely to see you snatch designs. No one is entitled to an OC, but even I would be lying if I didn't say there are literally 2 designs of which I can name the creator and who adopted them, on the spot, because I was salty over being too late. And both of the ppl that got the designs are actually active Winx artists and no hoarders at all. They just happened to like the same designs as I did and were faster, so obviously there is 0 reason to hold grudges towards them.

Honestly if you feel like a good design has gone to waste to a 'hoarder' which can happen, nothing holds you back to contact them and ask if they'd be interested in reselling it to you. If you're friendly about it, the worst you can get is a no.

What I also found to be a bit weird in the hoarder discussion is that (even among the users whose names were dropped when we were talking about how fast their designs sold) 'all the good designs are taken' is silly at best and rude at worst. Diawaterfalls' adopts got mentioned in a post and they literally still have some really pretty ones open? I have had to close my comment section because people were arguing over who was and wasn't first and how to bid properly, whilst the adopt was still unclaimed (and funnily enough she went to a third-party that AB'd her). But it’s also rude, because there are numerous open adopts out there. And although I am positive this wasn’t the intention, by claiming “all the GOOD designs are taken” you create the equation: “If all good designs are taken, than the ones that have yet to be claimed are bad.” I doubt this is what ppl were trying to pass. But please think before you speak.

Also remember art isn’t a charity. You cannot expect an artist to turn down a ‘hoarder’ because you would care more for their character. Who might seem a greedy person in your eyes, might be to them a generous soul that appreciates their work and helps them pay the bills. If I see someone buys multiple of my designs, I’m always a bit emotional that this person likes them and even is willing to get some more. It makes me really happy to see the same faces pop up, in fact and all of these people have been sweet and supportive to me. Not only is this an income for me, it also helps my self-esteem knowing there are people willing to give me money for my work. Art isn’t a first need. This is basic economics. If someone is willing to pay more than another person, chances will almost always be in the favor of the highest bidder. This isn’t malice from the artist’s side. Please do not villify them for accepting what you call ‘hoarders’. During COVID, this is a major income for many of us and please don’t forget you never know what’s playing behind the scenes. By complaining about 'hoarders' you also scare away possible customers for artists. I've had people apologize for buying so many chars from me like??? why would you apologize for that? As I said, I find it heartwarming.

But Yes, there are some cases where hoarders make me pull my hair out and it’s 1) when they are incredibly rude, 2) don’t respect the terms of service by re-selling your designs for a higher price than you asked and 3) if they’re cheapskates. What I mean with the last one is people who will comment “All of them” on very cheap or free to take batches. If you can afford to get everything at once, why not get one more expensive design? At the end winx is a show targeted at kids, so there definitely are minors w/ no jobs here that would love an adopt but can’t afford the fancy ones. The other thing i mean with a cheapskate is one I find much worse and it’s when they demand the artist to lower the price. This is rude and if you can afford it, but ask them to lower the price, you are basically saying their work isn’t worth the original price. I’m not going to drop names, but I’ve seen one of the more ‘infamous’ hoarders do that, so if you really burn to know, DM me, but this journal will stay negative mention free.

Is there a way to solve this?

Yes and no. There are things you can do, but 'fixing' isn't a realistic thing.

What you can do as an artist:

  • If you are positive your designs will sell regardless, you can work with slots on badges (bv: only 2 designs per account).

  • If you’re doing really well (which tbh, I can think of some accounts that definitely could do this), you could start a patreon in which ppl get early bird access to a lot of your designs (f.e. 1 or 5 dollar a month gives you x amount of hours early access)

  • Higher the prices of your adopts

What you can do as a buyer:

  • Remember you are not entitled to a character.

  • If you don’t use your designs, put them up for sale.

  • Or you can put on your acc u don’t mind if ppl ask you about it

  • Enjoy your adopts?? like rlly idk, i’m glad u enjoy them in whichever way you want and support artists

  • if you reaaally must, maybe try to backpedal a bit on the amounts you bulk buy, but yeah

Am I a hoarder?

If you bought adopts that you didn’t end up using that doesn’t mean you’re a hoarder c: It’s such a negatively loader word that’s tossed around much too fast. Thanks for supporting artists.

That’s it

for now
